Deciding you want a career in safety & security.

There are very few barriers to entry and access to the industry is relatively simple. You do not usually need academic qualifications to start work become SIA qualified but a good standard of general education would be helpful. If you are employed by an agency (or contractor) that provides contract security services to clients, you will need a Security Industry Authority (SIA) front line licence. To qualify for this, you must:

  • Be aged 18 or over.
  • Pass identity and criminal record checks.
  • Complete relevant approved SIA training
  • You can take an approved SIA course at a college or training centre before applying for work.

This qualification is designed for those learners wishing to apply for a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a door supervisor. It is based on the relevant SIA specification for learning and qualifications and is supported by Skills for Security, the standards-setting body for the security industry and the SIA, who regulate the private security industry.

Door Supervisor training is followed by an accredited qualification and suited for anyone who wishes to work in the private security industry in the UK. With this licence individuals can work in places, such as corporate buildings, shopping malls, retail outlets, construction sites, residential sites, schools, banks, hospitals, nightclubs, bars, pubs, stadiums, hotels, cinemas, in any venue with entertainment and alcohol licence, etc.

Qualification achieved, now time to get your license approved.

Well done! You have gained your SIA qualification or First Aid Certificate. What now? Your SIA Qualification will grant you the opportunity to apply for an SIA License.  To get your SIA license, all you must do is. Complete the SIA license application on the website, the cost of starting a licence application is £190. You will need to verify your identity to satisfy parts of your SIA application, namely your photo ID. The easiest way to do this is at the Post Office. The SIA will verify your identity and run a background check on your criminal record. If you have lived abroad for 6 months or more, you may be required to provide some supporting evidence. You will then receive your license in the post!

A SIA Door Supervisor Licence is valid for 3 years. Meaning you can now apply for jobs within the industry, the security industry is currently heavily understaffed and there is great demand within the job market.
